I'm still pretty green before someone states that this is a stupid question.
We had a call today that was "Walk-in freezer sounds like it's going to EXPLODE". Got there, evaporator was iced up and the fan blades were hitting. The way it was iced up indicated low charge, thick ice on the inlet and getting thinner towards the outlet. Confirmed on the sight glass that it was low. While I was defrosting the unit, my boss was trying to find the type of refrigerant the whole time. He tore through the condensing skid, the evaporator, the customer, old invoices from previous customers with no luck. Finally we got lucky and found a something written in sharpie that indicated a weird refrigerant that I never heard of (I don't remember exactly but I do know we looked it up and it's $700 a tank.) If we wanted to confirm this, how would you guys go about it?
