Help understanding refrigeration cycles

I'm a newbie to understanding refrigeration in general, so I'm sorry if this is a dumb question but could someone clarify refrigerator cycles to me? I've read on many sites that newer/modern refrigerators will run for 4-8 hours (depending on the model) and then switch off for the defrost cycle. However, I've also seen people talking about "duty cycles" where they talk about (again, more modern/newer) refrigerators running for 20 minutes and then turning off for 20 minutes and this is seen as normal and part of the duty cycle. These two things seem to contradict each other. Am I missing something and these are two different kind of cycles?
