How do you higher altitudes/elevations influence BTU?

I'm based out of Vancouver, BC and I also do work in Calgary, AB. How come does Calgary require a higher BTU for the same size as a walk-in cooler than it would in Vancouver? I understand Calgary has a higher altitude than Vancouver. Why is this so?
