No explosive fuck ups to report this time. Worked on screw compressors for the first time. I was just kind "pm'ing" the rackhouses. I tried checking whatever I could. There was a few things that I didn't know how to check or why it was there.

the compressor had a "desuperheating valve" and a "motor cooling valve". Why does it need two? I guess the motor cooling valve was tied into the suction for the subcooler and dumped toward the back of the compressor. My guess is that it cools the "motor" and the desuperheating valve cools the screw bits.

What the fuck is a volume index valve? Someone had labeled it "side unloader". It seems to activate on a delay after you turn the compressor on. My guess, something to do with allowing the compressor to start up more easily but I don't know. I don't know how to test it either because it seemed to be controlled by the carlyle module and not novar

Low temp 404 rack was running its subcooler down to a 30 degree sst. That's hella low. Never seen one run that low before. Why the heck would they do that? It also was programmed to allow both the large and small valves to work in unison if need be which I was always told was a big no-no. I heard that some stores have super efficient txvs installed into the cases and they need super subcooled liquid to work. Is that why or is it for the compressors?

There were two time delays for the screws. Seemed like they had delayed shut off. Why? Also It seemed like most of the racks just ran all their compressors all the time but there were two medium temp racks that seemed to be cycling one compressor off. My guess would be that you don't want your screw compressors cycling at all but I don't know. I think they had programmed a float in. I'm wondering if that was causing issues as I was told we should remove all float programming.

On the attached pic, The compressor in the middle had a bad y10 valve. The discharge was 198 degrees. The compressor on the left in the picture had ice on the y10 valve but its discharge was 190. The compressor on teh right though had a cool y10 but its discharge was 150. I checked the probes and they were all correct. What would cause something like this? The compressor on the left was the smallest of the bunch. It's motor cooling valve was activated. DUNNO
I wrote this engineer about it. Usually he has all the answers but he hasn't gotten back to me. I will say I enjoyed not having to shout over the compressors like you gotta with regular recips. That whining was kind of grating though. Still used ear plugs. Can't believe how expensive these compressors are. Isn't any wonder why a certain cheapskate big box store rarely uses them.
