DEFRA begins UK F-gas review

UK: The UK government is beginning work on its own review of the F-gas regulations and intends to publish a report by no later than 31 December 2022.

Rebecca Pow, parliamentary under-secretary of state at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), said that it intended to engage with stakeholders on this work later this year.

She was responding to a parliamentary question, from Conservative MP and Environmental Audit Committee member Matthew Offord, on the timeframe “for the review to remove the use of fluorinated gases”.

The European F-gas regulation (517/2014), which was transferred into UK law post Brexit, is currently under review with intended changes being announced by the end of this year.

The UK government will be monitoring the outcomes of this review and it’s own Committee on Climate Change has previously called on the government to match or exceed any future changes to the European F-gas regulations.

“The UK has a legal requirement to review the Fluorinated Gas (F gas) regulation and publish a comprehensive report of this review by no later than 31 December 2022,” said Rebecca Pow. “The Department is now beginning internal work on the review and intends to engage with stakeholders on this work later this year. The review will include an assessment of opportunities for faster and further action on phasing down F-gases.”
