Can you use R22 refrigeration gas in an R134a appliance?

The appliance in question is a 10 year old refrigerator that's no longer cooling. On the compressor it says R134a so apparently it only accepts that particular gas but the technician insists on refilling it with R22 gas.

I Googled it quite a bit and it seems like R22 has better thermal conductivity than R134a but I'm not sure if the compressor is compatible with it.

Any ideas?
