A little career advice?

So to keep it short and sweet I haven't been in the field long (3 years HVAC install, service with smaller family companies. 2 years refrigeration service with larger commercial company). I love working with larger commercial equipment and always want to learn more but it seems like the only way for me to make more money in my current field (according to my managers) is to constantly upsell customers. I have a hard time selling unnecessary parts and equipment to customers who are financially struggling. Is this how the field is in general? I'm thinking about becoming a stationary engineer because I really just want to maintain and fix equipment as I'm not into being a salesman but I love service as it makes me test my knowledge on equipment I'm not familiar with. Any advice on either getting over charging customers or a new direction for me career wise?
