Alternative home refrigeration solutions?

My fridge / freezer died after only about 6 years, and it sounds like that's pretty normal, especially for the French door models. I'd like to replace it with something that will last longer. I don't want an ice maker or a water chiller or a laser defence system or whatever, I just want a big cold box and a smaller colder box and some doors that let me put stuff in them.

The space in between the surrounding cabinets is around 36" x 36" x 70". It seems to me (speaking from a position of near-total ignorance) that for the prices they are asking for a new consumer unit that will die in a couple of years, I should be able to line the hole with better (because thicker) insulation, get basic, solid industrial coil modules and compressor, drill a hole in the floor and put the heat rejection coils & compressor in the basement (where it's colder, easier to ventilate, and the noise is less of an issue), and get something that is cheaper, more efficient and more durable all at once. I could recycle the shelves and probably even the doors & drawer off my current fridge so it looks nice, and if something dies I could replace the part, rather than having to chuck it all in the landfill and pay for another big heavy hollow box to be shipped over from China or wherever they make them now (which will probably refuse to work without an internet connection anyway).

Why is this not more common? I looked at built-ins, but they cost more than I paid for my last car (still limping along 14 years later), and come equipped with artificial intelligence and a portal to Narnia, which I assume is what justifies the price tag. Am I missing something here?

Thanks!
