TL;DR- How long can a scroll run backwards before it kills itself?
A lot of text- Was putting out fires at a store today after they dealt with a power failure. They were on a generator. So, I'm looking around at all of their equipment and come across a condensing unit with a scroll running backwards.
I immediately hear it once I got close enough. Also am aware that its not uncommon for a generator hookup to swap a leg of power which would cause this. So I swap a leg to my comp and get her going. Nbd. Its making good pressures and temps. SH & SC numbers are good. So I moved on to the next issue.
It must have been running backwards for a couple hours, though.. I was always tought that a scroll can handle maybe a couple minutes of reverse rotation before it was toast. Maybe my mentor was just trying to scare me into learning what it sounds like and how to identify it so as to not to compromise the equipment..?
Either way, I advised the customer to give us a call when their power was restored, and to turn the disconnect off to that equipment until we returned, to protect the compressor.
Just wondering how the compressor isn't dead, basically.
