120 volt freezer temp monitor/alarm?

Anyone know of one? For a residential chest freezer.

Lots of battery models out there but they all have bad review and bad battery life, but I don't want to worry about that or remember to change them every 3 months.

If it would be great if it was a plug in(120volt) with back up battery for if the power goes out.

any ideas or brands that you know of?

I can't seem to find anything in this area

Rattling noise??

My boyfriend left the freezer door opened just a tiny crack overnight, just barely noticed it now when a rattling sound started. Tons of frost everywhere inside the freezer, so I turned it off and left it open to defrost.

This is a brand new unit that the property manager put in only a week ago, so I’m worried that it could have caused major damage. Is that possible?? Am I going the right route?

New refrigerant system could cut data centre cooling costs

JAPAN: Two leading Japanese corporations claim to have developed a data centre cooling system, using a new HFO refrigerant, that could cut power consumption in half.

NEC, the multinational information technology and electronics company, and NTT Communications, Japan’s largest telecommunications company, have developed the cooling system using the low pressure refrigerant R1224yd.

This is claimed to be the first time that a low pressure refrigerant has been used for air cooling.

Actually an HCFO, R1224yd was developed by Japanese manufacturer AGC Asahi Glass as an A1 non-flammable refrigerant. It was designed mainly for use in centrifugal chillers, binary cycle generators and waste heat recovery heat pumps.

Said to be easily retrofitted, joint experiments of the system at an NTT data centre are said to have demonstrated that the air conditioning power consumption can be reduced to half compared to conventional water-cooling systems.

The system is expected to be commercialised in 2022, and NTT will first consider introducing it into its own facilities. In the future, it is expected that the technology will be available to customers with a requirement for large-scale cooling equipment such as hospitals and commercial facilities, as well as communication equipment.

There are also said to be plans to utilise the exhaust heat for secondary uses.

Coolair threatens action against online company

UK: Air conditioning contractor Coolair Equipment has threatened legal action against a company using the Coolair name in a series of high-profile online adverts.

The company, thought to be based in Estonia, has been offering individual desktop “air conditioning” units, branded Coolair, for sale at $89.

The ads for the evaporative cooler began appearing in the last couple of weeks on Google, and direct visitors to an ‘official Coolair’ website.

“We first became aware of this promotion when we started receiving calls from angry customers asking why they had not received the products they had paid for,” said Coolair Equipment managing director Neil Gibbard.

“It’s obvious why customers are assuming we’re involved. The Coolair logo being used on this ‘official coolair site’ looks very similar to ours, and as we are normally top in the search engines people are making the connection.”

“After further investigation, the websites appear to belong to a company in Estonia, our lawyers have identified the individual responsible and have issued cease and desist orders,” confirmed finance director, Helen Sharratt. “If these do not have the desired effect, we will have no choice but to escalate the matter further.”

Coolair Equipment Limited’s lawyers, Pannone Corporate, have contacted the Estonian businesses by letter and email and are awaiting a response.

Barocaloric material in line for chemical prize

Researcher Juan Manuel Bermúdez García will present the development at the UK’s Royal Society of Chemistry

UK/SPAIN: A family of hybrid organic-inorganic materials that can be used as safe and eco-friendly solid refrigerants are finalists in the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Emerging Technologies Competition.

The materials, developed by a team from the University of A Coruña (UDC), are said to exhibit large thermal changes under the application of low pressures and can be chemically engineered to be adaptable to different operating conditions.

Researcher Juan Manuel Bermúdez García, from the QUIMOLMAT Group at the University’s Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (CICA), will defend the project selected in the Energy and Environment category at the end of September.

The Emerging Technologies Competition is the Royal Society of Chemistry’s annual initiative for early stage companies and academic entrepreneurs who want to commercialise their technologies to make a global impact.

Twenty-four finalists have been selected in four categories – health, food & drink, energy & environment and enabling technologies – the winners each receiving a cash prize of £20,000. The winning projects will also be assigned a Royal Society of Chemistry mentor who will provide ongoing support for one year, with the possibility of also receiving an additional £20,000 business acceleration grant.

The UDC project – Hybrid organic and inorganic materials as low-pressure refrigerants with zero emissions – are based on the use of barocaloric perovskites. A perovskite is any material with the same type of crystal structure as calcium titanium oxide. They are the latest in high-performance semiconductor materials and have been successfully applied in high-performance photovoltaics.

The winners will be announced at the end of September.

Hello all, I was hoping someone on here would know how to fix an issue I am having on my ice machine. I have a hoshizaki Km-900MRH, and for some reason it stops working when the temperature outside gets too hot over 95 degrees in Texas. It gives the one beep error and shuts off after making one batch of ice.

Apprentice in need of some wise words

Hello all, I am in need of either some kind words of wisdom or maybe just a kick in the ass. I've been in the hvac world for 6 some odd years now, have now finally found a company willing to get me on an apprenticeship and have an excellent journeyman above me. The work is on industrial screw compressors and air driers. I am one of two refrig apprentices, the other who I will say is an excellent technician. Hes been here for 4 ish years, year 3 into his apprenticeship. I have been here for 8 months, they've jumped me to a second year apprentice right off the bat. I'm in my own truck and can call the other guys whenever, but man am I ever feeling stressed out. The air compressor stuff is easy. Refrig, I feel like I'm asking stupid questions or are unsure of myself. Just pulling my hair out everyday. Is this normal, I understand I just have a lot to learn. But this comes to my frustration of I am so stressed out and i feel like I'm underpaid. I'm at 23/hr in toronto area. Please, some wise words or something. This just feels like too much stress

AHR Expo organiser considers postponement

USA: The organiser of the AHR Expo, scheduled to take place in January in Chicago, is considering delaying the event until March due to ongoing concerns about Covid-19.

Surveys have been sent to exhibitors, visitors and co-sponsoring groups seeking opinions on rescheduling this annual showcase of HVACR products for March 15-17, 2021.

Any changes to dates could also affect the scheduling of the ASHRAE Winter Conference, which is held traditionally in the same city to coincide with the exhibition.

The AHR Expo organiser insists that no final decisions have yet been made, but says in a statement on its website: “Given the uncertainty of the pandemic in combination with changing restrictions by the State of Illinois and the City of Chicago, we feel that changing the dates to provide an additional seven weeks to plan and prepare may be a wise decision.”

AHR Expo is currently scheduled to take place at McCormick Place in Chicago from January 25-27. With five months to go, just over 1400 exhibitors are listed as having taken space at the 2021 event. The last AHR Expo in Chicago in 2018 broke all records with over 2,100 exhibitors and more than 72,000 visitors.

A decision to delay the 2021 event would be a sharp u-turn on the organiser’s previous insistence that the exhibition would not be postponed.

ASHRAE, with its Winter Meeting scheduled for January 23-27 at Chicago’s Hilton Palmer House Hotel, is monitoring the situation. Current president Charles Gulledge confirmed that ASHRAE had been presented with the possibility of delaying the 2021 Chicago AHR Expo. “While no one can predict the evolution of the pandemic, an additional seven weeks may make a difference in our ability to conduct the exposition,” he told members on the ASHRAE website.

Insisting that no decisions had been made, Gulledge added: “I wanted you to be aware of this information even though potential impacts on the 2021 ASHRAE Winter Conference and possibly the 2021 June Annual Meeting in Phoenix due to shifting the AHR Expo to March are still being studied.”

He also revealed that evolving restrictions on gatherings from the State of Illinois, the City of Chicago and by the Hilton Palmer House Hotel were other considerations affecting the viability of the Winter Conference.

Frdigesplits take the guesswork out of system selection

UK: Fridgesplits are a new range of refrigeration systems available from Beijer Ref UK and Ireland wholesaling outlets.

The Fridgesplit concept is designed to take the guess work out of coldroom and freezer room selections. The initial Fridgesplit Standard range sees the Danfoss Optyma condensing unit being perfectly matched to a Modine ECO evaporator with the  option of a control pack. Capacity duties range from 1kW to 5.4 kW

All systems are available from Dean & Wood, HRP, RW & DWG and are provided with a three-year warranty as standard.

The range will expand shortly to include the Fridgesplit Premium range which will use the Optyma Plus units matched to a Lu-Ve evaporator. The Premium versions will offer the same benefits of the ECO range but with increased capacity and a higher specification which includes a fan speed controller, mains isolator and a network-able electronic controller.

“We have been working with this concept for a long time. Before launching we needed to ensure we partnered with the right suppliers to ensure our criteria of quality, competitiveness were met along with ease of use,” said Beijer Ref UK innovation and marketing director Howard Noble.

The highly efficient Danfoss Optyma condensing unit employs microchannel heat exchanger technology and is designed for lower GWP refrigerants R449A on MT applications and R452A for LT systems.

The Standard range combines the Optyma with the ECO EVS compact cooler, ECO GME wedge cooler or ECO GCE box cooler. These evaporators have casings made from magnesium aluminium alloy which combines durability with ease of cleaning. Heaters and fan motors are connected to an easily accessible IP54 terminal box.

All combinations are available from stock.

National ACR awards moved to June

UK: The National ACR & Heat Pump Awards 2021, scheduled to take place in Manchester on January 21, has been postponed until June 10.

Uncertainties as to whether the event would be able to take place on that date due to Covid-19 restrictions and the effect that furloughing is having on entries are said to be behind the decision.

The postponement has been announced despite a reportedly large number of early table bookings.

“The January event has already received a huge take up of table bookings, much more than is usual at this point within the schedule,” said Juliet Loiselle, the publisher of ACR Journal and organiser of the event. “However, many marketeers are still on furlough and I believe that it would be too big of an ‘ask’ to expect them to enter their categories in time. As you know, the deadline is actually middle of September and judging set for beginning of October, so it’s highly unlikely they would all make it.

“Also, I’m conscious that it could put the judges under undue pressure, when perhaps there could be no need.”

Further details of the event on June 10, which will take place at the Midland Hotel as previously scheduled, will follow in due course.

Danfoss goes live

DENMARK: Danfoss is to host its first ever Cooling United Live, an online event specifically for air conditioning, commercial refrigeration, food retail and industrial refrigeration audiences.

In lieu of traditional trade shows and conferences, Cooling United Live will serve as both a learning forum and new technology exhibition. It will take place on October 7-8, 2020.

“It is time to reconnect with our peers and leaders in our industry and move cooling forward,” said Danfoss Cooling marketing communications director Dorthe Borup Sindberg. “We have an engaging lineup of thought leaders and interactive sessions for both days of Cooling United Live. And, unlike a traditional conference, attendees can log in from anywhere in the world. Therefore, we’ve made sure to have experts on hand in multiple languages, so everyone can participate.”

Cooling United Live will focus on the various ways the cooling industry is growing and evolving. It will feature a wide variety of session types tailored to different audiences. It will include live panel discussions and Q&A’s and a range of sessions on a wide range of topics.

Attendees will also have the opportunity to speak with Danfoss experts in their local languages or participate in post-session chatrooms— much like a traditional conference.

There will also be a number of product and system demos, whether through 3D renderings of new products or more hands-on demonstrations.

“As we’re all adapting to a new way of life, we are eager to reconnect with our customers and all fellow cooling professionals in a new and engaging way,” said Stéphane Nassau, senior vice president of global sales at Danfoss Cooling. “That is our main purpose behind Cooling United Live — to provide an environment that fosters professional development and relationships in our new, sometimes disconnected, environment.”

FinCoater reduces lubricant usage

UK: Industrial lubricant company Chem Arrow has launched FinCoater, an applicator that can reduce fin press lubricant usage by as much as 50%.

The FinCoater is said to give operators the ability to decide exactly how much lubricant needs to be applied through five simple entries in the FinCoater controller.

It is mounted in the existing lubricant bath, with a 4, 8 or 15 gallon reservoir mounted to the side of the press area. Lubricant is pumped to the felt rollers and the specified lubricant amount activated by the controller is applied to the felt rollers then applied to the aluminium surface.

The FinCoater has two sets of rollers: The first set is to stabilise the aluminium as the second set of rollers applies the specified amount of lubricant. This control eliminates over application that causes safety concerns like operators clothing and gloves soaked with lubricant. It also reduces evaporator or condenser coils having excess lubricant which can lead to residue issues such as soaking packaging or shipping dunnage.

Cold chain links to net zero online

UK: A new virtual event, aimed at companies involved in the storage or distribution of chilled or frozen food, has been announced for the end of September.

Cold Chain Live! Towards a Zero Carbon Cold Chain, comprising new publications, on-demand interviews, live workshops and discussion forums, is aimed at helping businesses prepare for one of the most important challenges for the coming decade – the path to decarbonisation.

For four themed weeks beginning Monday 28 September 2020, Cold Chain Live! promises to bring together businesses from the cold chain with experts from the fields of energy, retail, logistics, vehicles, buildings and economics.

“With the challenges of navigating recovery from Covid and Brexit changes on the horizon, it would be easy for our industry to lose sight of the major changes in technology, customer demand and regulation that will drive demand and opportunities to decarbonise the cold chain,” commented Cold Chain Federation chief executive Shane Brennan.

The themes to be examined through Cold Chain Live! Towards a Zero Carbon Cold Chain are defining net zero, changing demand, future of transport and cold chain ecosystem.

Each week will begin with the publication of a new Cold Chain Federation paper and supplementary expert blogs introducing the theme on Monday, followed by the release of a new leader interview giving the perspective and insight of a cold chain industry leader on Wednesday, finishing with a virtual workshop and wash-up open discussion on the Friday. All content and virtual attendance is free.

The Cold Chain Live! virtual event series will be delivered in partnership with Star Refrigeration, Schmitz Cargobull, The Supply Chain Consulting Group and Savills.

Taking CO2 refrigeration training to college

USA: The North American Sustainable Refrigeration Council (NASRC) and training provider the ESCO Group are developing a CO2 curriculum for community college and trade school HVACR programmes.

Together, they hope to address one of the root causes contributing to a shortage of US technicians trained to install and service natural refrigerant technologies.

While the US is waking up to the use of “natural” refrigerants, market barriers such as high upfront costs, a lack of performance data, and a shortage of trained technicians have prevented the widespread adoption of natural refrigerants.

NASRC is a non-profit organisation working in partnership with over 130 stakeholders from the supermarket refrigeration industry to overcome the barriers to natural refrigerant adoption in supermarkets, including technician training.

According to NASRC, several factors contribute to the technician training challenge, including a shrinking workforce and limited training opportunities and resources. “But in many cases, it begins with a lack of exposure to natural refrigerants during initial training because natural refrigerants have not been incorporated into school curricula at a national level,” says NASRC.

“Technicians should be exposed to advanced refrigeration technologies, including natural refrigerants, as early as possible in their training,” insisted NASRC executive director Danielle Wright.

ESCO Group, an educational and training body for the HVACR industry, is the primary source of HVACR curriculum for schools in the US and a leading training entity for school instructors.

The two organisations have formed a committee composed of CO2 experts, training specialists, contractors and technicians, equipment manufacturers, and school representatives to help develop the curriculum. The curriculum is expected to be finalised and available to schools in 2021.

“Once the curriculum is complete, our goal is to see it widely adopted by HVACR programmes across the country to build a future technician workforce that is well-versed in CO2 technologies,” said Wright.

fridge and freezer suddenly not cooling

I opened my fridge this morning and noticed that the fridge and freezer weren’t cold at all, ice cream soft, etc. I noticed that it was quiet as well. I pulled it out from against the wall and cleaned all the coils and the fan. I put the plate back on and plugged the fridge back in. The fan began working I could hear it, and see it blowing air. I gave it a few hours to see if it was working but it feels like room temperature. Any advice? It’s an Amana. To be honest it is quite old, maybe ten years. I’ll get a new one if I have to but wanted to see if there is something else silly I’m missing here. Sorry I don’t know anything about fridges so bear with me. Thank you all!

Refrigerant leak concerns

Hey everyone! I was being dumb and managed to put a hole in my refrigerant line. What followed was hissing and white mist being flung into the air and at some boxes nearby. I ventilated the entire area, my only concern is does the refrigerant leave a residue? Is there a way to clean it? I know there's oil in the lines but if it only leaked for say 5 seconds is there a chance it flung oil out? I appreciate any answers, I have anxiety and am just trying to make sure I clean everything I can and that none of it is dangerous if I miss some. Thanks again. Btw this was a mini fridge, Also if it sprayed onto drinks are those still safe to drink? Can I rinse them?

the leak was inside the fridge, looking in there I can see the oil on the walls so it definitely sprayed oil aswell. I closed the door as fast as I could but at least 3 seconds of the stuff spraying got out. Should I be at all concerned or am I freaking out for nothing?

Nate’s recovery machine raffle aids charity

UK Evomart, the recently established wholesaler of HVAC and refrigeration tools, parts and components, is to raffle a unique customised recovery machine in aid of charity.

The CPS recovery machine, worth around £600, carries refrigerant-themed artwork, created and artistically applied by Nate Bray, the 11-year-old son of Evomart MD Bradley Bray.

“During lockdown my son has worked tirelessly on his artwork. To kill the time, he asked if he could practice customising something of mine. We opted for a HVAC themed customisation of a CPS Products CR400 110v recovery machine,” explained Bradley Bray.

There is even a video of Nate’s efforts:

All proceeds of the raffle will go to Naomi House & Jacksplace, a charity providing a homely environment to children with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions.

The raffle – which starts today – will be open for two weeks, with the lucky winning ticket being picked by a member of staff at NaomiHouse.

Tickets are only £10, and can be purchased via the Evomart website.

Need Help!

So products must've been stacked wrong in my Delfield 6000xl cuz the next morning, I open my garage door and it was really hot and freezer door ajar with product out. Now, my freezer just runs non-stop and has been unable to reach temperature for compressor to rest. It struggles to get to 20° and struggles to get to 0 which is where it is set to rest. And the one time it reaches 0, it does not rest and also will not go below the set temperature. Can y'all point me in the right direction?

How do I defrost my freezer?

My standalone freezer has so much "snow" building up around all the inside edges. How exactly do I get rid of this?

I assume I need to defrost it. Do I just take all the food out and unplug it until it all melts away?

Do you work on the trash box known as the Delfield 4 drawer vista?

Anyone else? An account we have has one of these units in everyone of their stores with barely any room to work on it. They have nothing but problems it seems. Also my coworkers who work on them create more problems... Either way, was just wondering if anyone else hates these hunk of junk cases as much as i do

Samsung joins Carrier Alliance

USA: Samsung Electronics has signed a strategic long-term agreement with Carrier Global Corporation to supply compressors and inverter technologies for use across Carrier’s residential HVAC portfolio.

In joining Carrier’s Alliance programme, Samsung will also supply Carrier-branded replacement compressors, a benefit for Carrier contractors ordering aftermarket parts.

The Carrier Alliance programme was introduced last month with the intention of to optimising the company’s supply chain by strengthening and lengthening strategic relationships with suppliers. Carrier maintains that the Alliance will provide certainty, security and growth opportunities for Carrier and its key suppliers.

“We are excited to expand our strategic relationship with Samsung and are pleased to welcome them as one of the newest Carrier Alliance suppliers,” said Ed Dunn, Carrier’s supply chain vice president.

“Through the Alliance program, we are identifying the best of the best, a select group of suppliers that share our expansive geographic reach, breadth of offering, focus on quality and cost excellence, and commitment to diversity and sustainability,” he added.

The two companies have worked together in the past and Samsung engineers worked closely with Carrier to integrate Samsung compressor and inverter technology in Carrier Infinity products with Greenspeed intelligence. Samsung’s inverter control integrates with the compressor and connects seamlessly to Bluetooth technology to simplify the job of service technicians and to help ensure the customer always has the most up-to-date operating software. This long-term agreement will expand upon that supplier relationship.

ORNL produces 3D-printed cooling smart wall

USA: A leading US laboratory has demonstrated a first-of-its-kind 3D-printed concrete smart wall cooling system.

The Empower wall, which measures 5ft (1.5m) by 8ft (2.4m), was 3D-printed at the Department of Energy’s Manufacturing Demonstration Facility at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) using an infrastructure scale additive manufacturing system called SkyBAAM that prints concrete.

SkyBAAM eliminates the need for a gantry system commonly found in large-scale additive manufacturing systems

SkyBAAM is described as being low-cost, cable-driven, field deployable with the possibility to be adapted for any construction site. It eliminates the need for a gantry system commonly found in large-scale additive manufacturing systems, and is said to be capable of being set up within hours at a construction site with minimal site preparation.

Inside the Empower wall is a thermal storage and active insulation system with a chiller that connects to the wall. Embedded pipes carry chilled water throughout the wall during low peak demand hours, cooling its interior temperature.

Active insulation surrounding the thermal storage can vary thermal conductivity on demand, transferring coolness stored in the interior of the wall to the occupied space when needed.

The Empower wall also uses model predictive control to optimise the operation of the active insulation and thermal storage based on the prediction of future conditions which can include weather or the occupant’s behaviour.

Based on the control predictions, the optimal charging/discharge rate for the wall and timing can be determined. The wall’s embedded sensors can then send a signal to the existing HVAC system to turn on or off.

“By working in concert with the active insulation, this control method minimises energy consumption and energy cost during peak demand times without compromising thermal comfort,” said Pijae Im, an ORNL buildings researcher.

A smart inverter powers the chiller connected to the wall and the pumps that transfer the cool temperature stored in the concrete to the wall’s surface. This inverter is connected to a battery that also stores energy from the building’s main power grid during low electricity demand times and allows the energy to be available when needed during peak demand times.

The smart wall concept will be validated when two additional Empower walls are built for installation in office buildings next year.

ORNL collaborated with the US Department of Energy’s Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) to produce the walls, test functionality and reveal field validation results. The project is also supported by the Advanced Manufacturing Office and the Building Technologies Office in DOE’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy.

Safety first at new BESA Academy

UK: The Building Engineering Services Association (BESA) has opened its new online Academy with its first online health and safety environment course and test in partnership with Mitsubishi Electric.

Opened this week, the BESA Academy will deliver a comprehensive programme of training courses, assessments and CPD for individuals, employers and training providers in the building services sector. A suite of free CPD courses is also being provided via the Academy supplied by BESA affiliate members Airflow, Altecnic, Flamco, HASL, Kingspan, TATA Steel and Swegon.

A highlight of the launch is the six-module Health and Safety Environment course and test, covering the latest requirements for keeping workers safe and meeting new site operating procedures.

With many of the industry’s test centres currently struggling to clear their backlogs following the lockdown period, BESA expects rapid take-up of this course because it can be accessed, completed and the test assessed online at the candidate’s convenience.

The course of around 3-hours duration meets the H&S requirements for all craft and operative SKILLcards and is designed for those within the heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigeration occupations.

The test can be taken as part of the course or as a standalone. The course and test costs £95.00+VAT (£50.00+VAT for BESA members). The test on its own costs £19.50+VAT.

Further information here.

Access

The BESA Academy is designed to allow individuals to access all of the resources needed to improve their existing skills and learn new ones while also keeping their qualifications and competencies up to date. Employers and managers can also ensure their workforces are fully qualified and able to comply with legislation and industry standards.

All training modules are accessible from a smartphone, tablet or laptop whether the user is at home, at work or on the move.

BESA also insists that training providers can also outsource the online learning elements of their courses, freeing them up to focus on the aspects that require physical participation.

“A lot of colleges had been forced to discontinue some engineering apprenticeships, for example, because they are more expensive and complex than other types of training,” said BESA’s director of training and skills Helen Yeulet.  “Delivering more of the course content remotely will make it more economically viable.”

The Academy also aims to attract a new generation of engineers to the industry with younger people, in particular, used to accessing learning materials remotely and at their own convenience.

“This will help engineering employers looking to modernise their approach and appeal to the 18 to 35 group, in particular,” said BESA vice president Claire Curran. “With the new working from home culture, we must introduce greater flexibility into our employment and training models.”

Toshiba Carrier tests spot zone cooler

JAPAN: Toshiba Carrier is testing a spot zone air conditioning system to provide heating and cooling to a public viewing area at Chiba City Zoological Park, east of Tokyo, Japan.

The system, based on Toshiba Carrier’s Flex Air 2 packaged air conditioner spot cooler, uses well water at two locations at the observation deck in the centre of the zoo. The system will deliver cool air in summer and warm air in winter through a louvre that automatically swings left and right to reach visitors.

Toshiba Carrier says this demonstration test will enable the company to identify issues for practical application of an air flow system using well water, with a view to applying it to similar facilities in the future.
